Choosing Your Steel Tank

What is a Single Skin Tank?

Unlike Bunded Oil Tanks, Single Skin Oil Tanks incorporate no form of secondary containment whatsoever. Therefore, in the event of a spillage, an environmental pollution incident may result. Single Skin Tanks are therefore inherently unsuitable for installation at any agricultural, commercial, industrial and institutional installations, or at domestic installations with a capacity over 2,500 litres.
At many installations, fitting a Single Skin Oil Tank where a Bunded Tank is legally required is an Offence.
Even where a Single Skin Tank may currently suffice, serious consideration should be given to fitting a Bunded Tank.

What is a Bunded Tank?

A Bunded Tank simply consists of an ‘tank within an tank’. In the event of a spillage, the liquid will collect in the outer tank, preventing the environment from becoming polluted. Bunded Tanks are now required at commercial, industrial, institutional and agricultural premises.

Is a single skin or a Bunded Tank required?

If any of the following statements apply, then a bunded oil tank must be installed:

  • Tank has a capacity in excess of 2500 litres
  • Tank is within 10m of controlled water
  • Tank is located where a spillage could run into an open drain or to a loose fitting manhole cover
  • Tank is within 50m of a borehole or spring
  • Tank is over hard ground or hard-surfaced ground that could enable spillage run-off to reach controlled water
  • Tank is located in a position where the vent pipe outlet is not visible from the fill point
  • Tank is supplying heating oil to building other than a single-family dwelling

Should I choose a rectangular or cylindrical tank?

While a rectangular tank is more space efficient, cylindrical tanks are recommended for higher volume tanks. Cylindrical tanks are more structurally efficient and will more successfully withstand the outward directed pressure of the liquid stored within.
